After ICU the next few days is the hospital were pretty uneventful. Lot's of pain for Steve, no sleeping and anxiety to boot. And finally, the anticipated discharge day. Not sure if you've ever stayed in the hospital for any length of time, but the waiting around for other people to do what they need to do, see who they need to see, talk to who they need to talk to, sign and click the right buttons and boxes can make for a very long day. So nice that Steve's getting to go home, but the unknown and this massive amount of pain he's in is just gut wrenching.
We do know that he'll continue to be in pain and the doctors are thinking healing at home and doing physical therapy (PT) is going to be best for him. He still can't go back to work, probably another 10 days or so. He'll have to learn to overcome the pain and be able to function before he can even think about work. Although he's already talking about how and when to get back there - probably more than anything to occupy his mind.
The next few days from ICU to discharge from the hospital via my text messages:
Date: Sun, Oct 9, 2016 at 8:03 AM Just talked to Steve (Scott spent the night). Sounds like things are all about the same. He got a little more sleep last night, & doing well with keeping pain under control.
This is when he's mentally going to start having a hard time with being in the hospital. So please pray for his patience & understanding.
Date: Sun, Oct 9, 2016 at 6:33 PM Steve just switched rooms (down to 606). That's one step closer to going home. He's not hooked up to a bunch of machines & they only take vitals every 4 hours. He's been pretty sleepy & unmotivated today, but said tomorrow he knew he needed to "get on it."
Date: Mon, Oct 10, 2016 at 10:31 AM He's just still so tired. Which is totally understandable, but hard to watch since he knows he needs to move around. His edema is ridiculous & not helping!
Date: Mon, Oct 10, 2016 at 8:20 PM He's hurting again!
Date: Tue, Oct 11, 2016 at 8:05 AM Soooo glad I spent the night at the hospital! Not only did Steve need me all night, but his surgeon came in at 6:40am.
They're going to schedule a kidney specialist & hematologist to come talk to us to make sure we have all the info we need. He was cleared for discharged today, if those 2 specialist get here.
The continued pain Steve's in is due to the clots that remain in foot & lack of blood flow. It's going to take WEEKS for his body to build collateral channels for proper blood flow. Even the narcotics don't seem to help the pain, so this is going to be a struggle.
Pray for him getting out of here today & fast healing with manageable pain. Thank you for your continued support & prayers.
Date: Tue, Oct 11, 2016 at 3:09 PM We've seen everyone we need to...just waiting on discharge paperwork.
Date: Tue, Oct 11, 2016 at 3:49 PM Steve's getting discharged!!!
