Severe Dehydration- Road to an Amputation

At some point during the night after the first ER visit, Steve lost 6lbs and his right leg was back to "normal" size.  The next day he had a regularly scheduled appointment with the nephrologist for a normal follow-up.  Steve had to stop several times on the way into the doc because the pain in his right leg was so bad and it was shooting pain into his hip.  The doctor said that if it was a blood clot that his foot would be cold and his toes would be turning colors.  When I said "Yes, that's exactly why we took him to the ER!" His then said if it was blood clots that Steve wouldn't be sitting there because the pain would be so bad and that we had to trust the ultrasound that he'd ordered earlier on as well as the ER images.  He concluded that the pain was due to muscle cramps from dehydration.  He lifted his food and fluid restrictions and told him to stop the Lasix.  He was also told to drink plenty of fluid that night and have a lot of salt.  Steve ended up drinking 80oz of Gatorade and several glasses of water from about 3:30 PM until bed time, he also did a shot of pickle juice as well as ate a salty Chinese meal. Yum!
