Pirate Steve - Road to an Amputation

It's Sunday, October 23, 2016 around 7:30 in the morning.  One of the hardest things leading up to this point for me was hearing my husband declare to the 6 doctors and medical students that were in the room that he'd made up his mind.  "Chop it off!"  He almost said it so nonchalantly.  I can't even imagine how it must have felt for him to say those words out loud.  Declaring that you're ready to have a piece of your body removed.  For what?  Why?  Those answers we still didn't have.  I was so scared for him, for the challenges I knew were ahead, but more than anything scared that he could potentially face this later down the road...again.

If you were to get to know Steve, he's super blunt, sarcastic, witty and downright funny. When I shared the news about the amputation with our friends and family, most of them were in shock and clearly didn't know the right thing to say. Right!?! I mean, I didn't know what to say either. However, some of our closest friends, Jeff and Holly, called me later that day and asked if they could bring us dinner and throw Steve a farewell to your leg party. It was awesome!

Holly bought a pirate themed cake and had them write "Sorry about your leg Matey!" She also brought Steve an eye patch and parrot and the only thing he needed to complete the pirate look was a peg leg. Tee-hee! Jeff was even able to sneek in some beers, and they surprised us with some more friends, Scotty and Lisa. It was a small "party" but we enjoyed our dinner, cake and some laughs, which took our minds off what the next day would bring.
