New Vehicle - Road to an Amputation

You know how when you're looking for a new vehicle you talk to people, do research, go look at and even give them a test drive?  Well, that's kind of how we were treating this decision with the possibility between a forefoot amputation or below knee amputation.  What kind of prosthetic would he have, what colors, shoes, hardware, software, size, shape, etc?  Think about it, this is going to be your mode of transportation for the rest of your life - you want to make the right decision.  Not like you can just trade it in.

We talked to two amputees, both who had a below knee amputations.  While their stories varied, the common detonator was mental awareness and strength.  They were both transparent with how hard this would be and how much his life would change, but they were also inspirational and gave him hope for a good outcome if he went into it with mental preparation.   To be honest, I'm not sure you can actually mentally prepare for having your leg chopped off anymore than you can prepare for the death of a loved one who's ill.  It's still a loss and something that takes time to heal from - physically and mentally in this case.

My texts from the day:

Date: Fri, Oct 21, 2016 at 9:25 AM Acute pain is finally here to replace Steve’s nerve block catheter (it came out last night & he’s been battling pain the whole time).  This will provide him another 18-24 hours of (hopefully) 0 pain.  When it wears off he’ll be able to tell if the new meds that will continue to drip through the catheter will work & therefore if he can foresee going home to “deal” with the pain for a month +.

Date: Fri, Oct 21, 2016 at 4:53 PM The nerve block was successful & Steve slept for 4 hours.  He saw a physical medicine specialist, who discussed the expectation between the 2 amputations.  His surgeon told us that whichever decision Steve makes is the right decision.  He talked to an amputee who laid out some of his trials, thoughts, etc.  We’re hoping to see a prosthetist, who will be able to give him a low down on what kind of prosthetic they’d be able to give him.

Date: Sat, Oct 22, 2016 at 1:14 PM Steve’s nerve block is still working!  He’s seen a prosthetist & amputee today.  He made his decision, he’s going to do a below knee amputation.  We don’t have any other info right now, but I’ll send another update when we do.  Visitors are welcome!
