Essential Oil Substitutions

I absolutely love the world of essential oils. To me they’re fun and easy to use. If you’re feeling at all overwhelmed with all the choices you have, you need to find someone like me, a holistic health and lifestyle coach, to help you take the overwhelm out of using natural solutions. Hint, hint, and wink, if we’re not already working together email me to get the conversation started!

I know it’s super frustrating to find an awesome sounding diffuser recipe or you located the perfect roller blend to try, but you’re missing one or more of the oils to be able to execute it. One of the coolest things about essential oils is their versatility. Take the example of Lavender, it’s well-known for its calming aroma, but is also beneficial for soothing irritated skin. Most essential oils are like this – their benefits tend to overlap in other areas and thus share similarities.
So, whether you’re just building your essential oil collection, or you simply ran out of an oil there is more than likely an alternative oil that you can use.

There are two ways to substitute an essential oil:
FUNCTION = What it is you’re trying to accomplish with the oil?
AROMA = What scent are you going for?

Use the oil substitutions chart below to help you identify what essential oils you can use to substitute based off either function or aroma. If a screen shot just isn't cutting it, you can download the free Essential Oil Substitutions.pdf

I do want to point out that although essential oils have similar properties and we can substitute them for others with benefits that overlap, there’s a reason that an essential oil was chosen for the recipe. In other words, there may still be a tradeoff if using a substitute because no two oils are identical. But you do what you gotta do and work with what you’ve got, right?

Happy oiling!

Hi Katy! Copaiba is on the list, for function it can be replaced with Black Pepper, for aroma you can use Cedarwood. Valor is a Young Living blend. It's hard to substitute blends because they're made up of multiple oils. I sell doTERRA oils, but did a quick Google search and it suggests 4 drops of Stress Away, 1 drop Idaho Balsam Fir and 1 drop Frankincense. I can't speak to Stress Away or Idaho Balsam Fir as those are unique to Young Living. If you're looking for the doTERRA substitute for Valor it would be Balance. Hope that helps. Feel free to email me at Danette@WellnessSpoiled.com if you want to talk more.
