I’m not the biggest fan of the term resolutions as it relates to making a plan for the new year. I feel like resolutions are too limiting for our brains. We resolve to go to the gym or watch our sugar intake, but those are just the action steps we “should” take to reach a bigger goal. It’s not that taking those actions are a bad thing, but you’re not tapping into the essence of what it is you’re really trying to accomplish when you simply make resolutions.
Think about a television picture and the quality of the display – “the resolution.” When you resolve to go to the gym more or watch your sugar intake those represent just a few pixels of that image being displayed. I want you to think about the entire display at once. Be it 6 weeks, 6 months or at the end of the year, I want you to think of your future self. How do you feel? What do you look like? What are you doing? Overall, how do you picture yourself? What kind of image do you want to see?
So, instead of making resolutions [pixels], I want you to take that ending image and come up with your mantra or theme for the new year. Something that might just be a little scary or feel unattainable. It should be a word or phrase that when you see it or think about it, it will light you up and make you feel inspired to keep moving forward.
I have a free workbook that can help you with this concept and a
30-Day Power to Be Challenge. The Wellness Spoiled community is tagging along with the global doTERRA community and all doing this movement together. The challenge is going to on January 1st, however, it’s a self-paced 30-day challenge, so you can join any time. The best day to start is now - whether now is January 1st, April 16th, or July 10th.
There are some pretty common areas that most of us tend to focus on when we’re thinking about a fresh start:
Getting Fit
Detoxing
Being Mindful
Controlling Stress
Clean Cooking/Eating
You know I love my toxin-free solutions, like essential oils and supplements. Let’s look at some of my favorite products for supporting us in each of those categories.
GETTING FIT
Essential oils and supplements can take your workout to the next level while also making it more enjoyable. Apply energizing oils to your next or chest for a pre-workout boost. After exercising, massage tired muscles with soothing oils or add them to an Epsom salt bath.
Getting Fit doTERRA Products: Breathe®, MetaPWR™, Copaiba, Deep Blue® Stick + Copaiba, AromaTouch®, Deep Blue® Polyphenol Complex.
DETOXING Our bodies cannot function properly when they’re overwhelmed with toxins. Personal care products, the environment and even our food can be filled with them. Help your body detox by adding Lemon or Tangerine essential oil to your water each day, choose wholefood form supplements, and choose natural products that are fragrance and chemical free. Read my blog
Reduce Your Toxic Load for some practical steps you can take.
Detoxing doTERRA Products: Lemon, PB Assist+, Lifelong Vitality® Pack, On Guard® line, abōde™ cleaning line, and shop any of doTERRA’s personal care items.
BEING MINDFUL
Essential oils can help us be more aware of our surroundings. Apply a drop of oil to your hands, rub them together, from a cup over your nose and breathe deeply. You can also try adding essential oils to your prayer, meditation, journaling or gratitude practice. They can truly up anchor in and create a grounding experience.
Being Mindful doTERRA Essential Oils: Balance®, Frankincense, Steady®, and any of the Yoga Collection oils.
For tips on different mindfulness practices and ways to make them part of your routine check out my blog post on
Mindfulness Hacks.
CONTROLLING STRESS
There are a plethora of essential oils that can help calm and relax the mind. Applying a drop of oil to your temples, wrists, over your heart, or on the back of your neck can help bring that sense of overwhelm down a notch. I suggest you find an oil or oil combination that brings y to a state of relaxation and keep it with you or close by, at least, at all times.
Controlling Stress doTERRA Products: Adaptiv™ Calming Blend (oil) and the Adaptiv™ Calming Blend capsules are my #1 go-to. Other oils include Serenity®, Balance®, Calmer®, Brave®, and any of the Emotional Aromatherapy System will help you tackle specific stress triggers, like grief, failure, loneliness… you name it.
CLEAN COOKING/EATING I enjoy food very much! And I even enjoy cooking. However, sometimes I feel a bit uninspired in the kitchen or just flat out am not in the mood. You can shake things up by using essential oils in the kitchen though – add them to drinks, desserts and even your main entrees. A little goes a long way, so only use a drop or two. You can even use the toothpick method (add oil to a toothpick and swirl through the food). Remember you can always add more, but you can’t take it away once it’s been added. I have some other tips for
Keeping It Simple In The Kitchen too, in an old blog post.
Clean Cooking/Eating doTERRA Essential Oils: Lemon, Lime, Wild Orange, Rosemary, Basil, Oregano, Cilantro, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Ginger, Peppermint, Lavender, Black Pepper, and the limited-edition Cuisine blends that have been sold in November and December as part of the Holiday Gift Guide.
If you’ve been around me or the Wellness Spoiled community with any consistency then you know there are soooo many things you can do with essential oils.
