Creating a Healthier Hotel Room

Essential oils and using natural solutions are an important part of my lifestyle. That includes me having a little control in my environmental circumstances too, especially in travel type situations. Today we’re going to cover some of my top tips for creating a healthier hotel room, as well as what essential oils are must-haves to help make your travel experience more enjoyable.

TRAVEL HAND WASH PUMP
Before you leave on your trip, fill an empty 15mL bottle with doTERRA On Guard® Cleaner Concentrate. Pack your tightly sealed bottle of concentrate inside an empty foaming hand wash pump and secure the pump lid tightly in the locked position for travel. Once you arrive at your destination, fill the pump about 1/3 full with water and add the On Guard® cleaner concentrate.

Using this hand wash allows you to use a toxin-free product to wash your hands, clean your travel mugs/water bottles, fruit for snacks, and even spot clean stains on clothes so it doesn't set in while you're away from your laundry room.

There are a few tasks I do shortly upon arriving at my travel destination.

One is to wipe down any hard surfaces or commonly used items (like the TV remote!). You can use doTERRA On Guard® Sanitizing Mist or Wipes. Or simply fill the sink with hot water and a few drops of Wild Orange essential oil, then use a washcloth to wipe down fixtures, surface areas, and doorknobs. Add a few drops down the shower drain too, while you’ve got the Wild Orange out, for a fresh aroma.

Second, that’s almost immediate, is to bust out my diffuser and get it fired up to purify the air. A couple of my favorite essential oils and blends for this purpose are doTERRA On Guard®, Air-X®, or Wild Orange. Another reason I highly recommend packing a diffuser is so you can create and control the emotional environment you’d like. Be it in the morning to get going or in the evening to fall asleep.

BED BUG SPRAY
The third thing that’s pretty immediate is to spray down the linens with my DIY Bed Bug Spray, which of course was made ahead of time. In a 30mL spay bottle (upcycling an On Guard Sanitizing Mist bottle works great for this), add ten drops each of Peppermint and Siberian Fir, filling the remainder of the bottle with filtered or cooled/boiled water.

This bed bug spray is also handy to douse your suitcase and contents when you’re ready to leave and again when you get back home. Try to remember to do it before taking your bags into your living space and avoid unpacking your suitcase directly on your bed.

You may not be able to control what’s on the floor, but you can control what you take into the bed with you, so I highly recommend bringing a pair of flip flops, slippers, or slipper socks to wear around the room and remove before getting into or on any of the furniture.

Most of us have a hard time falling asleep the first night or two (or the whole time) away from the comforts of our own home. Serenity® Restful Blend is a lifesaver for every night of the year in my book, but especially when away from home. I like to put one drop of the bottom of my big toe and then rub my big toes together. This helps shut the wheels off in my head allowing me to fall asleep quickly. If you prefer, you can diffuse it too. However, use caution, I've found when I use too much Serenity at one time I wind up with very strange dreams. So, I personally recommend one method or the other. I like to diffuse Adaptiv™ at night since it’s a great oil blend for helping you get comfortable with new surroundings or situations and stick with Serenity on my big toe.😉

REVITALIZING SPRAY
Something else I like to pre-make before a trip is a revitalizing spray. It’s a great spritzer to stay refreshed revitalized while traveling. Again, using a 30mL spray bottle add 5 drops Lemon, 4 drops each: Lavender and Eucalyptus, and 2 drops each: Rosemary and Peppermint topped with filtered or cooled/boiled water. If you prefer to have a roller to apply topically anytime while on vacation, you can do that too. Use a 10mL roller bottle and double the essential oil recipe and top with Fractionated Coconut Oil verses water and you’re all set.

Spray in the air around you, making sure to avoid eyes, and/or spray on pulse points. If using a roller, roll on pulse points, like wrists. Take a few deep breaths and enjoy the revitalizing aroma.

I don't know about you, but I tend to do a lot more walking than usual when on vacation or even traveling for business, so the last thing I’ll leave you with is my tip for tired and achy feet. At the end of the night when you’ve climbed into bed rub AromaTouch® Massage Blend or Deep Blue® Rub into your feet. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your feet will forget how many steps you took in that day! It’s also great to massage into your calves and thighs, especially to help manage fidgety legs.
