Essential Oils for Pests

Most of us love spending more time outdoors when the weather is nice. I realize the bug types and populations can vary depending on where you live, however, one thing we all have in common is that there are bugs, in some form or fashion, everywhere! Today I want to share with you how you can use essential oils to tackle those pests - pests in the garden, pests in your home, pests bothering you while you try to hang out on the deck or at the park. If you're outside pests are sharing your space and that's no bueno.

The above, is a quick reference of some of the most popular essential oils to use with the most common pests. I know some of you like to dive deeper, so we're going to go over more creepy crawlies and flyers and the essential oils that can help in more detail. Use the oils below to create a custom spray for the specific pests you're targeting. To make the spray, add 5-10 drops [total] of all the essential oils in the recipe, or simply use the oils you have already into a 16oz spray bottle and top with water. Spray liberally on plant or area where the insect is frequently seen.

SPIDERS | GNATS: Peppermint, Basil, Cinnamon Bark, Cedarwood & Wild Orange
*add 2 drops castile soap

BEETLES: Rosemary, Cedarwood, Thyme & Peppermint

APHIDS: Rosemary, Cedarwood, Basil, Peppermint & Clove

SLUGS/SNAILS: Cedarwood & Rosemary

ANTS: Rosemary, Wild Orange, Peppermint & Clove

CATERPILLARS: Cedarwood, Peppermint & Wild Orange

MOSQUITOES | FLEAS | TICKS: Lemongrass, Cedarwood, Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Geranium, Citronella & Lemon Eucalyptus

When you are unfortunate enough to have one of the pests bite ya, use this Bug Bite Roller Blend to help with any and all of the discomforts that can come along with it, especially the sting and itch. Add 10 drops Purify, and 5 drops each: Lavender, Copaiba & Peppermint to a 10mL roller bottle and top it with Fractionated Coconut Oil, or carrier oil of choice (Jojoba, Avocado, Rosehip). Roll directly on affected areas, reapplying as needed.

I mentioned it up on the Oils for Pests graphic, but let's talk about pest kryptonite (aka TerraShield® Repellent Blend) for a moment. This is an effective, all-natural blend combining Lemongrass, Thyme, Cedarwood, Geranium, and Peppermint essential oils in a sesame seed oil base. It's safe and gentle enough for the whole family, including pets. A simple method for application with your dog, is to soak the collar in diluted TerraShield®. It also comes in two forms: essential oil and a convenient spray.

Have fun playing in the outdoors now that you know natural solutions have you covered!
